Mentoring is an art and a science. This toolkit is designed to offer activities to engage students and to help them grow to be successful in their careers. It is the accumulation of resources and activities that were utilized in the development of a mentoring program for Associate Degree nursing students. The science of mentoring starts with the practical aspects of helping students focus by identifying their goals, strengths and weaknesses. The art of mentoring is managed through the relationships formed in the process.
We have a diverse group of students in our nursing program at Community College of Philadelphia. We feel strongly that this diversity is one of our best assets. Mentoring nursing students to become engaged leaders in the health of their communities is vital to the perpetuation of nursing as a voice in all communities.
The Department of Nursing at Community College of Philadelphia would like to thank the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Nursing Workforce Diversity grant for their funding and support in the development of this toolkit. In addition, we would like to thank the Independence Foundation for their ongoing support to the department in helping to make some of the activities in this toolkit come to fruition.
